He saw no beginning and no end to the thing. Vast plates covered the creature’s hide, dark and running with rivers of sludge, each with a black bristle at the outer edge that might have been six stories tall. The thing gave off a ghastly stench – sweltering trash meets burning coal – that rolled over them in the breeze.”
